Princess Abigail

Princess Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kawānanakoa

Affectionately known as Kekau by her friends, our Founder Princess Abigail Kinoiki Kekaulike Kawānanakoa embraced a profound sense of kuleana for the Hawaiian people. She was a direct descendant of Hawai‘i’s Royal Family: granddaughter of Prince David Kawānanakoa; grandniece of Prince Jonah Kūhiō; and the closest link to Hawai‘i’s last reigning monarchs, King Kalākaua and Queen Lili‘uokalani. She was also the great granddaughter of Abigail Maʻipinepine Campbell, aliʻi and confidante of Queen Liliʻuokalani, and James Campbell, who was a pioneer sugar entrepreneur and landowner whose legacy lives on today as the James Campbell Company.

Throughout her life and through the establishment of the Foundation, Princess Abigail cherished and championed the preservation of Native Hawaiian culture and the well-being of her people, honoring the ali‘i tradition of caring for the Hawaiian people in perpetuity.
